Our Favorite Watercolor Supplies

You may have picked up that we LOVE watercolor painting! With all the crafty paint time we’ve clocked in over the years, we’ve tried out a few paint sets, brushes, and other supplies we think you should know about. Read on for more on what we love and why we love it!

Watercolor Paint Sets

  • Arteza Watercolor Paint Set, 25 Colors

    • Bright, opaque colors in a convenient box set. Use the inside of the cover as a paint palette to mix colors!

  • TBC 36 Color Set

    • If you don't want to commit too much mulah, go for a kid's watercolor set! This one has great reviews and tons of fun colors.

Watercolor Paint Brushes

  • Watercolor Round Brushes

    • THE BEST round brushes! Now, these are all one shape (round) so you may prefer a set with more variety of shapes. But these brushes are well made and make the most beautiful lines, thick or thin, making them especially great for painting things like leaves and flowers (and mushrooms, and bees, and moons, too.)

  • Watercolor Brush Variety Pack

    • This looks like a great little starter pack of brushes, with a combo of round and square brushes.

Watercolor Paper

  • Strathmore 5x7 Watercolor Paper

    • We love having a pack of these small 5x7 watercolor pages around, perfect for small projects, travel painting, and gift giving!

  • 9x12 Watercolor Paper

    • For paper you can practice on plus use for finished pieces, we go for medium-thick 140 lb paper. 9x12 is a great size for both practicing and final paintings!

Other Supplies We Suggest:

  • Two water cups are better than one! Use one for cleaning your brush and one for mixing colors.

  • Pipettes are super fun and a great way to collect small amounts of water for color mixing! Glass water droppers will totally work, too.

  • Paper towels - for dabbing up extra water and making cool, spongy effects on your paint

  • Salt - just for fun, the salt soaks up the water and makes super cool, moon surfac-y effects on watercolor paints

  • And finally, a pencil! Find one with an eraser that actually works :) And always sketch lightly when you plan to paint over your pencil lines.

Well, that’s it! Super simple, we hope this helped you get closer to having a little watercolor set up of your own for unplugging and tapping into your creative spirit.

What supplies can you not live without? Happy painting!
